A seasonalfeast for the family

Greens and fresh veggies come from our food garden where they are grown without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or artificial chemicals. Our fillet, sirloin and sausages come from grass-fed cattle reared on Spier’s pastures, along with delicious eggs laid by happy hens that scratch around freely in the fields. Both the chickens and cattle are raised without the use of antibiotics or hormones.

The kids can tuck into our special children’s menu after they’ve played on the rolling lawns and wooden jungle gym outside or discovered the secret bamboo forest nearby. Our award-winning wines compliment the menu, along with freshly-squeezed vegetable and fruit juices and a selection of craft beers and artisanal sodas.

Eight’s décor embodies the restaurant’s sustainable ethos, with lights made by local artist, Heath Nash. The impressive ceiling on the terrace has been lined with over 10 000 individually crafted flowers made from recycled white plastic milk bottles, and lit with low voltage LEDs. The light fittings in the main part of the restaurant were made from recycled plastic bottles.

A passionfor cooking with fire and smoke takes centre stage with a delicious range ofpasture-reared meats (many of which are supplied by Spier’s Farmer Angus). Themeat is smoked low and slow – at a low temperature for a long period of time –and this method allows lesser known cuts of meat like beef brisket, pork neckand lamb shoulder to be used. There are delicious organic vegetarian optionstoo.

The restaurant overlooks the rolling lawns and ancient oaks of Spier’s meticulously restored Werf – perfect for the kids to run wild on. It is self-service: guests order from the bar, and the food is brought to the table soon after. Sharing is encouraged, with family-style platters that can be ordered for the table.

The bakery produces slow-fermented, fresh sourdough breads as well as a selection of seasonal fruit pies and pastries baked daily. A new parking area will allow easy access for people collecting orders.

Since he joined us in 1996, Cellar Master Frans Smit has harnessed more than three centuries of winemaking history to transform Spier from a small cellar into a major, award-winning Stellenbosch producer. He and his team are passionate about crafting, with minimal interference, wines that are truly expressive of their terroir.

For winetasting, settle in at the parquet tables and admire the iconic Heath Nashchandelier.

This chandelier is made from 334 recycled Spier wine bottles and weighing 370kgs — which hangs above the tasting counter.
